State and supporters contribute 233,000 euros to Cancer Treatment Foundation in February
The Cancer Treatment Foundation received more than 233,000 euros in donations in February, of which half came from the state budget. The foundation's supervisory board approved support for the treatment of 17 new patients, along with continuing support for the treatment of many others. Together we contributed 135,000 euros to the health of cancer patients.
In February, one-off state budget support of 115,000 euros was issued to the Cancer Treatment Foundation, which the Riigikogu approved last year when dividing up distributive funds. Last year, the financial support of the state formed around 4% of the foundation's income.
The month started with celebrations of the foundation's 5th birthday. To this end we invited almost 100 people to the Humalakoda restaurant: the foundation's volunteers, supporters, beneficiaries, friends and fans. We summed up our first five years with some incredible numbers: nearly 600 people have received help from the foundation and over 6.1 million euros in donations has been raised thanks to the good deeds of Estonian people.
Many of those who have received help from the foundation were at the party: Ott, Raivo, Erik, Alar, Ene and Margit. Among the foundation’s volunteers, 10 received badges of gratitude emblazoned with ‘The Gift of Life’. At the end of the party we went to the Civic Theatre in Tallinn to see a play called Igatsus(‘Longing’).
We launched a targeted campaign to support the treatment of Agnes Jürgens, a former journalist with the Maalehtnewspaper and a civil servant. Thousands of euros in donations have been and continue to be collected for her treatment.
We collected donations at the Trad Attack and Placido Domingo concerts; in shopping centres in Tallinn, Tartu and Pärnu; at the All-Star Game in Tartu; at the final of Eesti Laul; at the Made in Estonia 2019 festival; at the military parade for Independence Day; and elsewhere.
Youngsters from Tallinn English College, the rap artist Nublu with his fan merchandise charity sale, Snoob restaurant, the children from Rukkilill kindergarten and many others contributed to the mission of the foundation.
We calculated that we sold over 16,500 Cancer Treatment Foundation charity reflectors in late autumn, adding over 30,000 euros to the foundation.
At the end of the month, the Tänapäev publishing house published a handicrafts book entitled ‘Crochet Yourself a Politician Doll’ by Terje Annusver. For it, the publishing house and the author donated dolls of 20 famous Estonian politicians to the Cancer Treatment Foundation. They include Mart Laar, Lennart Meri, Arnold Rüütel, Kersti Kaljulaid, Jüri Ratas, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, Andrus Ansip, Jevgeni Ossinovski, Kaja Kallas and Yana Toom. The dolls were put up for auction on Facebook, adding 1600 euros to the foundation’s coffers.
Due to the fact that the Tax and Customs Board will refund a record amount of overpaid income tax (almost 200 million euros) to Estonian people this year, Raili, a fan of the Cancer Treatment Foundation, made a lovely proposal: if every person donated 2% of their tax rebate to the Cancer Treatment Foundation, it would make a total in the millions of euros. So many people would obtain the help they need! Raili will be donating 5%.
