Raivo, Irene and Toomas are grateful for their lives

In recent months we have supported dozens of people, including Raivo, Irene and Toomas – who are all grateful for the hope and life they have been given.

Nearly a year ago we reached out a helping hand to Raivo Nõmmiksaar, a 38-year-old father living in Viljandi County.

Raivo sends his greetings to everyone and writes: "As of today my tumour is still under control. The lesions on my head have practically disappeared and the aggressive spread of the tumour has been halted. I’m feeling good, and thanks to the medicine I’ve won invaluable time that I get to spend with my family and friends. Every day is like a gift I accept with enormous gratitude.

“Unfortunately, the medication still has one big disadvantage: the price is too high, and I can’t afford it.

“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone – my benefactors, the foundation, my doctors, nurses, friends and everyone else. Let’s stay positive. I wish you all good health!"

Since 2017 we have been supporting Irene Amur, a 47-year-old mother and grandmother from Pärnu fighting lung cancer. Irene thanks all of her benefactors for their support. Her treatment costs nearly 6000 euros a month.

Irene says: "My fight against lung cancer has been going on for about three years now. It’s been a very difficult and emotional journey. However, thanks to the foundation and the generosity of Estonian people, my life has extended by about three years.

“The saddest part of all this is that it worries my loved ones who are closest to me: my daughter and her children. The idea that the worst thing possible could ever happen is horrible to think about. It would be devastating if the treatment came to an end now.

“I can only count on you good people to keep my life going. I thank you with all my heart."

Around 18 months ago, in December 2017, Irene spoke about her struggle with the disease on the charity show Inglite aeg on TV3. The show raised more than 64,000 euros in donations for the woman’s treatment, which has since run out.

At the end of March we started supporting the treatment of ERR sound engineer Toomas Kaur (59). He has been working on the news show Aktuaalne Kaamera for 30 years!

A month into his treatment, Toomas is hopeful and feels relatively okay, returning to work at the ERR studios this week.

Toomas writes: "With the help of ‘The Gift of Life' I received new medication for the treatment of my kidney cancer metastases. I’m very grateful and also very pleased that the side-effects are not as severe as I was warned they might be. There are people who can only tolerate it for a couple of days. Luckily for me, it’s been the other way around. I hope that knowing this will help others who are in the same situation.

“My appetite is good and so are my strength levels. So I can keep going to work and do whatever it takes for the well-being of my home life.

“Some medical tests will be performed in June to check how well the treatment has worked. I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to the foundation and everyone who supports their activities. Cancer fighters live parallel lives alongside healthy people. We must be grateful that our fight is being noticed and that people want to help us."

At the end of April we basically transferred 100,000 euros for medication in a single click. This is not all that noteworthy – medicines, as we know, are expensive. To pay a large amount of money in this field is not that special.

Spending is not difficult, but raising money is much harder: 99% of donations are of 1, 5 or 10 euros. To add 100,000 euros to the foundation, thousands of people simply have to make one click (one move). When you think about all of this, you will be in great, even breath-taking awe. A great sense of responsibility and gratitude. Before of our mission. Before you, our kind benefactors.

Let's just say it: the Cancer Treatment Foundation is a MIRACLE. Nothing less than a big, real, tangible MIRACLE. Picture this: everyone has been getting help for six years! We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for being with us and not leaving anyone without hope, help and the opportunity to live.
